Africa’s first 3D-printed homes and schools are going up in Malawi and Kenya

The World Economic Forum is reporting on an organisation called 14Trees that is 3D printing houses and schools first in Malawai and now in Kenya. The houses are printed in under 12 hours (!!) at a cost of under $10,000 (about R150,000).

Details are a bit thin (or maybe my Google-fu is just letting me down today?!), but here are some exterior and interior pictures, here’s a link to the school that just opened a few weeks back on 21 June, and below is a quick little promo video.

    1. Years ago, when I was half the man I am today (ie: much thinner 😆) we built a network in Kenya …

We rocked up in-country thinking we were so fancy schmancy and so advanced being from South Africa and all, and were going to show them some things! We were stunned and amazed that in Nairobi it was possible to order a fibre line and have it live *by the very next day*. This was about 10 years ago, and at the time it was still taking Telkom like, 6 months or so to install copper-based ADSL/Diginet services. The place had an energy and a ‘can-do’ vibe that I would love to see more of here back home.

It was a humbling experience for sure, and one I won’t every forget. We are perhaps not so special as we’d like to think here in sunny South Africa and need to stay sharp and work hard to keep pace with the rest of the world that is moving forward at a hectic rate!

      1. Wow John, very inspiring to know that you’ve been around. I always thought that S.A is like the USA of Africa for some reason, and unfortunately i thought wrong. The bright side is that at least there will be more jobs created whenever it hits us i guess….
